Have You Taken Advantage of the MOT Extension?
If so, keep reading...
Due to the outbreak of Covid-19, in March, the Government announced the introduction of a six-month MOT extension for cars, vans and motorcycles. This extension was granted to all drivers who had a MOT expiry date due between 30th March 2020 to 31st July 2020. Most drivers took advantage of this six-month MOT extension as they found themselves to have a later MOT due date. A new poll commissioned by The Motor Ombudsman, found this fact to be true.
The study authorized by The Motor Ombudsman, found that of the 765 individuals studied, over 50% of them opted to prolong taking their vehicle to a garage for its MOT. However, only 30% of the individuals studied stated that they would ensure to book their MOT either before or on the newly extended due date.
As a result of the vast number of drivers taking advantage of the extension, car garages across the UK are preparing to tackle the extra workload that is to enter their workshop doors over the upcoming months. Drivers are being asked to ‘Beat the rush’ and book their MOT appointment as soon as they can. The reasoning behind this demand for beating the rush is that garages will have to fit the extended MOT dates on top of the normal 2-3 million that would normally need tested around that time.
It is important to book your vehicle in for its MOT, as although you have the extension, it is up to the driver to ensure that their vehicle is safe for the road. A safe car protects not only its driver and passengers but also other road users. We can not stress the importance of having a safe car on the road enough!
In June 2020, the Government announced that the six-month extension would end. The Motor Ombudsman study found that, at this time, only 2% of respondents stated that they had organised and scheduled their annual MOT test. Thus resulting in the car garage industry stressing to drivers to book in for their MOT as soon as possible; in order to prevent a back-log and therefore cause a delay on people receiving their MOTs.
